HCMC - A fire broke out at a house in Thu Duc City, HCMC, early this morning, killing six people in a family and injuring another, local media reported.
The deadly blaze occurred at the house of Luc Chan Tam, 54, on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, Cat Lai Ward, at around 1 a.m. At the time, Tam was sleeping outside while six of his family members were inside the house. He tried to rescue the others and suffered second degree burns.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread very quickly and engulfed the entire house within just a few minutes. They tried to put out the fire and rescue the victims but in vain.
“I heard desperate screams from the victims, but due to the heat of the fire, many people were not able to come close to the door to save them," said Hoai, a neighbor.
Fifty firefighters, four fire trucks and some ambulances were sent to the site for rescue efforts. As they arrived and extinguished the fire, the six people inside the house had already died. Tam has been hospitalized.
The deceased were identified as Bui Thi Loan, 52; Luc Kien Anh, 27; Luc Tuyen Trinh, 25; Bui Thuy An, 24; Luc Kien Nghi, seven and a one-year-old child. They are Tam's wife, son, daughter, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
The house is 60 square meters and located some 2 kilometers from the Cat Lai Port. It has only one door.
“The fire also burnt five motorbikes. They were parked at the entrance, preventing the victims from escaping,” said Colonel Huynh Quang Tam, head of the HCMC Fire Prevention Police Department.
Until 7 a.m. this morning, the location was still sealed off. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
According to Nguyen Duc Hien, chairman of Cat Lai Ward, Tam’s family is categorized as a poor household. The local authorities are discussing suitable support for the family.
