As part of its efforts to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change, Vietnam is negotiating with the World Bank, entrusted by the Forest Carbon Partnership Fund (FCPF), to prepare for the signature of an emission reduction purchase agreement ( Emission Reductions Purchase Agreements - ERPA) on the basis of the results of the program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the northern part of Central Vietnam .
Vietnam is 5 e FCPF partner and the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to sign such an agreement, said Ha Cong Tuan, permanent deputy minister of agriculture and rural development.
The signing of ERPA will reflect Vietnam’s determination to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
In recent years, the forest cover rate in Vietnam has been stably maintained at 42%. The northern part of the Center covers around 3.1 million hectares of forests with a coverage rate of 5776% recorded in 2019.
The country is dynamic and responsible in fulfilling its commitments to fight climate change and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 8% by 2030 or even 25% with international assistance.
In 2018 the FCPF recognized that Vietnam had essentially completed the preparatory phase to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conserve forest carbon stocks, manage forests sustainably. and increase forest carbon stocks (REDD +).
