Financial stocks send VN-Index to new record

HCMC - Financial stocks, especially bank and securities stocks, were the cash magnets today, May 31, pushing the VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange to an all-time high of 1,328.05 points.

At the close, the main index rose by 7.69 points, or 0.57%, compared with the previous session, with 158 stocks gaining and 261 others declining.

The southern bourse saw over 737 million shares worth VND25.5 trillion changing hands, down 4.12% in volume but up 2.66% in value over the previous session. More than 36.8 million shares worth some VND1.6 trillion were traded in block deals.

Among bank stocks, VCB was the only one that lost ground, falling 1% to VND98,600.

The biggest gainers were STB, soaring 6.1% to VND33,800, and ACB, up 6.4% to VND41,400. Besides, LPB shot up to the ceiling price at VND29,950.

Bank stocks were among the most actively traded stocks on the southern market. STB had 42.13 million shares changing hands, while VPB and MBB had over 30 million shares traded each.

Many securities stocks such as AGR, APG, APS, CTS, BVS, IVS, BSI, AAS, VIX and VDS shot up to the ceiling prices. Other securities stocks including HCM, SSI, VCI, SHS, VND and TVS grew strongly.

Securities stocks were also the cash magnets. ART, SSI and SHS had over 10 million shares changing hands each, while HCM and VIX had over 8 million shares traded each.

The major contributors also included some steel stocks. HSG surged 6.4% to VND43,900.

HSG shot up to the ceiling price at VND52,700 and took the lead in terms of liquidity with 60.3 million shares changing hands.

Similar to the VN-Index, the HNX-Index on the Hanoi Stock Exchange rose 2.38%, or 7.4 points, to set a new record of 317.85 points.

There were 102 gaining stocks and 125 decliners. The northern bourse saw over 186.2 million shares worth VND4.36 trillion changing hands.

The major contributors were bank, securities and petroleum stocks.

Lenders BAB and NVB soared 8.9% to VND31,700 and 8.4% to VND23,300, respectively.

Many securities stocks and some petroleum stocks such as PVS and PVS shot up to the ceiling prices.

SHB was the most actively traded stock on the northern bourse with 40.92 million shares changing hands, followed by PVS with 25.88 million shares.
